What is Meditation?

Meditation: It's not just for monks. Honest. I used to think meditating was something only serene, enlightened beings could achieve. As a busy working mom with a million things on my mind, the idea of quieting my thoughts seemed impossible. But the truth is, it isn't about silencing your mind – it's about learning to observe it. That's why it's called a practice, and it takes time and patience. Don't get discouraged if you don't "get it" right away. I certainly didn't! The first few times I tried unsuccessfully, I was jealous of the people around me who were "getting it" and speaking in awe of their brain floating and feeling rejuvenated. I thought, "I want that!" But with a little guidance and consistent effort, you can unlock the incredible benefits for yourself. In this post, we'll share some simple tips to get you started on your own mindfulness journey.
Meditation, at its core, is a practice of shifting your attention inward to become more aware of your thoughts, emotions, and inner state. It is the process of moving beyond the analytical mind and accessing the subconscious, where deep transformation can occur.
It's is not just about relaxation—it is a tool for personal growth, healing, and connection to the greater aspects of life. Through inner reflection, we can transcend the limits of the body, the environment, and time to access higher levels of awareness.
Understanding Meditation Through Dr. Joe Dispenza’s Lens
Dr. Joe Dispenza describes meditation as a journey of self-discovery and transformation. In his teachings, it is the gateway to breaking free from old patterns and creating a new reality. Here are some foundational concepts:
- Meditation as Training for the Mind
Most people live in a state of survival, controlled by stress, fear, and past conditioning. Meditation trains the mind to step out of survival mode and into a state of growth and creation.
- Shifting from the Known to the Unknown
Meditation allows you to move beyond your current reality (the "known") and explore the quantum field—the realm of infinite possibilities. By letting go of your external circumstances, you can focus on creating a new, desired future.
- Accessing the Present Moment
The present moment is where all transformation happens. Meditation teaches you to quiet the "chatter" of the analytical mind and focus your awareness on the here and now, where you can connect with your true self.
- Aligning Energy and Intention
Through meditation, you align your thoughts and feelings to match the energy of the life you want to create. When your mind (intention) and heart (emotion) are coherent, you can influence the energy field around you.
The Purpose of Meditation
The ultimate goal of meditation is to become more than your current identity—to transcend the limitations of your physical body, conditioned mind, and external environment. By doing so, you can:
- Break free from habitual thought patterns and emotional addictions.
- Rewire your brain to think in new ways.
- Raise your energy to match the frequency of your goals and desires.
- Experience greater clarity, creativity, and emotional well-being.
- Deepen your connection with your higher self and the quantum field.
Common Misconceptions About Meditation
- “I need to stop thinking completely.”
Meditation isn’t about having no thoughts; it’s about becoming aware of your thoughts without attaching to them.
- “I can’t meditate because I’m too distracted.”
Distraction is part of the process. Each time you notice you’re distracted and gently return to your focus, you’re training your mind.
- “Meditation is only for relaxation.”
While meditation can help you relax, its true power lies in transformation—rewiring your mind and body to align with your higher potential.
If you are having difficulty relaxing, there are many meditation supplies out there! A mindfold (eye mask for meditating) can be very helpful! Mala beads can also aid as a tactile reminder when your mind wanders. Other tools include tibetan singing bowl, Zabuton cushion, copper pyramid, incense, crystals, and meditation stones. Create your ultimate zen space!
How to Begin Your Meditation Practice
- Set an Intention
Before starting, decide what you want to focus on. This could be calmness, healing, or creating a new outcome in your life.
- Find a Quiet Space
Choose a place where you won’t be disturbed, and sit comfortably. You don’t need any fancy equipment—just a space where you feel at ease.
- Focus on Your Breath
Your breath is an anchor that brings you into the present moment. Observe it without trying to control it.
- Be Patient
Meditation is a skill that develops over time. Start small (5–10 minutes) and gradually increase the duration as you grow more comfortable.
I found the easiest way to learn to meditate was to start with Guided Meditations. These made it easy for me to focus on what the guide was saying instead of just trying to clear my mind. In Summary:
Meditation is more than a practice—it’s a state of being. It is the art of tuning into your inner world, quieting the noise of the outside, and intentionally creating a new reality. As Dr. Joe Dispenza says, "When you change your energy, you change your life." Mindful awareness is the tool that helps you make that shift.
